The Japanese artist Takehisa Yomeji is a representative figure in the rapidly changing cultural milieu of early twentieth-century Japan. His ubiquitous graphic works are conspicuously absent from the official art historical discourse of modern Japan. He is a paradoxical artist who challenges art historical definitions and occupies a very different space in the history of Japanese visual culture.
